Arts Week

Arts Week - 5th-9th February 2018

Contemporary Arts- What does it mean?

An exciting week in Arts Week with many activities, workshops and cross curricular projects. This years theme is looking at Contemporary Arts and what that means.  We are looking at artists of today that create works that either have something to say, raise environmental and social issues or use abstraction from the literal. We are learning that the idea behind artworks can be the most important part of the art.

Year 5

Visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Year 5 had an exciting visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield on the 31st January to look at sculptures in the landscape and to take part in a workshop led by an artist. Artists who led the groups gave children the opportunity to think about materials used to create the sculptures and ideas, meanings and concepts in art looking at works by Barbara Hepworth, David Nash, Andy Goldsworthy and Caroline Locke.  Year 5 looked at how some artists intentionally make their work interactive including Antony Caro’s sculpture Promenade ( you can climb on it!) and that by interaction some sculptures even create music! Year 5 took part in creating sketches making observations of sculptures and making their own 3D sculptures out of card, Perspex and putty.  Artists working with Year 5 were impressed by children’s knowledge and understanding of the process of creating art and how articulate,  creative and confident they were in response to art works and activities. Well done Year 5.

The bungalow was transformed into Brickfields factory in Arts Week where children learnt the history of the brick industry that used to be in the Oatlands area (formerly known as Brickfields) of Oatlands 100 years ago.  Upper school took part in workshops where children learnt how to process Oatlands clay through different stages to make it into useable clay for our ceramic sculpture that will be also created in Arts Week. A very messy and very fun workshop!
