Digital Leaders 2018/19

Digital Leaders 2018/19 1

Welcome to the home of Oatlands Junior School’s recently elected Digital Leaders.

We’re looking forward to meeting every fortnight to discuss all things Computing-related and to practise our ICT skills. It will be our job to support our teachers and peers in Computing lessons, so we’ll be busy this year making sure that we’re IT experts.

Each week, we’ll also be awarding certificates for outstanding behaviour in the ICT Suite. We’ll be on the look-out for other children who set an example for the rest of their class, listen carefully to instructions and leave the ICT Suite clean and tidy.

E-Safety Assembly

In preparation for our Safer Internet Day next week, the Digital Leaders helped Miss Houseman deliver an E-Safety assembly to the school this week. Miss Houseman explained a little bit about Safer Internet Day, its theme and why it's so important and then the Digital Leaders did a fantastic job of presenting a variety of scenarios to the school and quizzing them on how best to deal with them. The scenarios were all based around giving or asking for consent when online. We were mostly very good at making good choices when it came to dealing with consent in an online world but we're looking forward to learning a little bit more next week when our E-Safety Expert Tim Pinto comes to visit!

Safer Internet Day 2019

The Digital Leaders are currently gearing up for our biggest event of the year: Safer Internet Day. We're looking forward to welcoming Tim Pinto back into school to run pupil, parent and staff training workshops and leading our own assembly to share the theme and ideas behind this year's Safer Internet Day. Watch this space!

Andrew Jones MP Christmas E-Card Competition

In the Winter term we were invited to take part in a competition run by local MP Andrew Jones. He asked us to design his annual Christmas e-card to be circulated to local groups and constituents. The children came up with some fantastic ideas and beautiful designs. Unfortunately, none of our e-cards were chosen as the winning entry but our very own Leila was one of the runners up!

Computing Role Models

With all of the changes taking place in our Computing Suite, we’ve been finding it a little bit tricky to keep it tidy during the Autumn term. We love having laptops to work on and lots more space in our Suite but all of the wires and the moving around of equipment mean that we have a much harder job of keeping things neat and tidy. The Digital leaders have taken it upon themselves to design posters based around important rules and reminders for maintaining a tidy ICT Suite. They’ve also been leading by example in Computing lessons ensuring that their peers are remembering to tidy up after themselves and leave the space as spick and span as they found it!

App-Testing

This week, we’ve been trying out one of the new apps that Mr Stell has very kindly installed on all of our school iPads called Explain Everything. We used the app to design posters reminding other children of the rules for looking after our ICT Suite and equipment. We particularly enjoyed trying out the feature which lets you record your own voice over a presentation to explain different slides and ideas. We’re already thinking of new and exciting ways that we could use Explain Everything in class to demonstrate our learning!
