Year 5 Macaws

We’re the Macaws!

Welcome to our class

We’re lively and positive, brilliant and bright.

We fly high and make the most of every day!

“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.”

Peter Pan - JM Barrie

Welcome back! We hope that you have all had a lovely summer holiday.

We have had a very busy first week in Macaws. As well as getting to know each other better, we have made locker labels, reading recommendations, written information letters and much more. It has been a fantastic start to the year!

Class Information

We have PE on Thursday and swimming on Monday so please wear your full PE kit to school on those days with long hair tied back and earrings removed.

Please remember to record reading and sign homework diaries. Thank you for your cooperation.

Enterprise Week 2021

What a busy time we have had! Enterprise Week has been full of activity and has been an incredibly enjoyable week, learning more about our theme of 'Valuing Ourselves and Others'. Our key aim has been developing skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work. The children have had the opportunity to consider the role money plays in all our lives, how to manage their money effectively, and have how to make money through an enterprise. Key skills of teamwork, communication, resilience, flexibility, delegation and patience have all been practiced this week. Today, we took part in a Hula workshop to help us learn new skills and have FUN!!!

The rest of the week will be spent planning ideas for a fundraising event to raise money for Just B! I can't wait to hear the persuasive speeches and vote for the winning idea!

Anglo-Saxon handling day

Macaws enjoyed their Anglo-Saxon and Viking handling day.  What fun was had trying to make sparks with flint, using a butter churner and spotting the designs on an Anglo Saxon helmet.  Remember to ask your child what they learned today!

NSPCC Number Day 2021

We are having a fantastic NSPCC Number Day in Year 5! We have all taken on the challenge of dressing up in a number or something maths related. We have learnt about the importance of the NSPCC Charity and thought about how we can help each other. We have also completed a maths challenge - building 3D shapes from spaghetti and marshmallows! Our final activity, was linked to our class number...we had to write a story, rap, poem with the exact number of words!!! It was a challenge!!! Here are some photos of our day!

Be Internet Legends!

At Oatlands Junior School we promote using the internet safely at home and at school. We had a go at building a 'Be Internet Legend' trophy kit, as part of Google’s e-safety programme. Inside the tube, the children found a set of instructions and pieces of the trophy. They had to scan the QR code to activate the online safety quiz. Each correctly answered question is awarded with an instruction, which the children followed to build their trophy successfully! Here are some of our completed trophies!

Bikeability 2021

This week, the last two groups of Year 5 children have been taking part in the Bikeability programme led by NYCC. On the first day, they met their instructors and spent time learning about how to check if their bikes were safe. They then practised stopping safely and signalling - it can be quite tricky! On the second day, they spent time cycling around the local area, testing all the skills they had learned. It was a great two days and the children really enjoyed it, especially as they battled all weathers - including hailstones!

Y5 - Jenna Whittingham
Jenna's intricate drawings are beautifully capture the light and shadows through the precise tones she has used whilst drawing small. The key looks like it could be lifted from the page and used to unlock a door. Fantastic detail, Jenna. Well done.

The Award goes to....Shreya Raghunam

Shreya’s final piece, a colourful drawing of a Hawksbill Sea Turtle has captured the movement of this magnificent creature. She has used the skills learnt over the last few weeks to draw what she can see and to use line and tone to create a 3d effect on a 2d drawing. Shreya, your drawing is sensational, well done.

Mrs Alderson.

Class Novel - Spring 2021

The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Q. Rauf

'The boy's an absolute menace.'
'He's a bully. A lost cause!'
'Why can't he be more like his sister?'

I've been getting into trouble for as long I can remember. Usually I don't mind 'cos some of my best, most brilliant ideas have come from sitting in detention.

But recently it feels like no one believes me about anything - even when I'm telling the truth! And it's only gotten worse since I played a prank on the old man who lives in the park.

Everyone thinks I'm just a bully. They don't believe I could be a hero.

But I'm going to prove them all wrong...

Special Mentions - Autumn 2

Well done Sami and Jenna! You should be really proud of all your hard work this half term.

Christmas in the Macaws Class

We've been getting into the Christmas spirit this week by creating some fabulous crafts. We've made calendars, cards and decorated festive tea light holders and sun catchers! Just look at our brilliant work!

Y5 Science Week

A huge well done to all of the Macaws this week. We have had a fantastic week learning all about science. All of the children have enjoyed planning their experiments linked to our Science Superheroes:

  • Comparative and fair testing
  • Observing over time
  • Pattern seeking
  • Identifying, classifying and grouping
  • Researching using secondary sources

Children In Need

Today we have been raising money for Children in Need, taking part in the last 20 minutes of Joe Wick's 24 hour PE challenge. All the children looked fantastic in the pyjamas and onesies! We have spent the week looking at the ‘Five to Thrive’ activities which have included -

  • Connecting with people.
  • Take notice of feelings.
  • Get Active.
  • Be Curious.
  • Give – acts of kindness.

Remembrance Day 2020

On Wednesday 11th November, the Macaws class learnt about the Harrogate born RAF pilot, Brain Lane, who went missing in action in December 1942. Brian Lane has a small memorial in London and the children designed their own memorials that could be placed in Harrogate to celebrate the local war veteran.

Special Mentions - Autumn 1

Congratulations to our special mentions winner, Ellie and Finlay. You should be incredibly proud of all your hard work from this half term.

Harvest Festival

Whilst we have not been able to celebrate Harvest Festival in the usual way at school, in our RE lesson this week we have learnt lots about the traditions of the festival and when it first started. We researched our own facts and created some very informative fact files. Here are some examples of our work.
